About a year ago I purchased a 1968 Volkswagen Bug that my father and brother started putting together some 20+ years ago. The bug, nicknamed "Wild Bill" was in fairly rough state, with the standard rats nests in the interior, some dings, dents and body damage all around. That being said the car is nearly completely rust free, a feat in itself in Pacific northwest, and after a bit of fiddling it started right up. I drove it from Montana to Idaho on a 300 mile journey with sketchy brakes, no shocks, a gearbox with no 4th gear and a constantly freezing carburetor. The smelly little bug made it without a hitch. So far most of the work that i have managed to accomplish is in the front end, adding torsion adjusters, new disc brakes, new ball joints, and tie rods. Unfortunately I have not been able to test out its new front end. Upon closer inspection of the business end I discovered a spark plug that was completely stripped. Combined with a busted gear box and very poor wiring, I decided the best course of action would be to finish up the front end and give the rear end the same treatment with some updated brakes, a gearbox with full compliment of gears and some new heads for the little 1500 cc motor. As it gets colder work might be limited but my hope is to have "Wild Bill" back up and running by next summer.
